A few hours from Tenerife by ferry is the unspoilt
island paradise of El Hierro...
Being
the smallest of the Canaries, it's the most unspoilt, with
a population of under 8000 and virtually no tourism-related
development
- Being the youngest island means that the unique landscape
of volcanic rock formations has eroded less with the elements
and is most striking
- ...and being furthest West in the archipeligo, El Hierro
has the warmest waters in the Canaries!
The island is formed by the half-submerged rim of
a massive volcanic crater which gives an amazing panorama. From
the misty meadows, pine trees and juniper forests that crown the
island, down precipitous cliffs to a rolling landscape of vinyards
and volcanic lava flows leading gently to the Atlantic ocean.
Underwater
the scenery is breathtaking. The steeply-sloping volcanic landscape
is riddled with drop-offs, reefs, arches and boulder fields. The
marine reserve at the Mar des Calmas (so-called because of its
favourable conditions) provides the island's fauna with a refuge
from the pressure of commercial fishing, meaning large specimens
of grouper and jacks are much more common here than in other parts
of the Canaries. There are other species which are found more
commonly here, including many sharks, manta rays and the emblemmatic
burrfish or "Tamboril"
There
are many shore-diving sites on the island, but for access to the
best sites, boat diving is a must. We dive with our friend Antonio
from "El Tamboril" (www.eltamboril.com)
diving centre in La Restinga. The centre is equipped with a RIB
launched from the harbour a few metres away, and Antonio has unrivalled
knowledge of the island's dive sites.
