Tenerife is a large volcanic island approximately
97 km long by 48 km wide covering 2059 sq./km. The island has
the highest peak in Spain, Mount Teide at 3718 meters (12,198
ft). The landscape appears to be baron and naturally untidy but
has a strange beauty to it, no more so than when ascending into
the Mount Teide National Park. The topography underwater is no
less spectacular, with steep sides, many caves and an abundance
of marine life, an undersea world to suit all levels of experience.
All this and it's only 4 hours flying from most UK airports!
The location of Tenerife, one of the Canary group
of islands situated approximately 300 km from the north west coast
of Africa at approximately 28o North ensures the island is washed
with clean Atlantic waters and is almost pollution free. The underwater
visibility will normally be between 20 and 30 metres and the water
temperature around the 20oC mark at all diving depths making comfortable
diving in a 3mm wetsuit possible all year round.
Tenerife is blessed with an abundance of marine
life from large marine mammals to the smallest shrimp; common
sites on dives will include large shoals of fish, Stingrays, Trumpet
Fish, Morays, Octopus and many others, large Turtles are also
common visitors to these waters.
The volcanic nature of the island ensures interesting
natural underwater features with caves and canyons in places dropping
steeply into the abyss. Currents may be encountered in some areas
so seeking local advice or participating in conducted diving is
a must.
There are a few ship wrecks dotted around the island,
mostly fishing boats and a few larger vessels, such as El
Condesito. These wrecks are made all the more spectacular
by the water clarity and the abundance of marine life which inhabit
them.
Undersea Adventures can offer a variety of
dive sites along the south coast of Tenerife, both boat and shore
to suit divers requirements and personal interests; safety will
always be our highest priority.
